Reflection on God’s Call: "Come As You Are"

The story of Moses and the burning bush is a powerful reminder that God calls us as we are, in whatever state we may find ourselves. Moses was not in a temple or a place of high status when God called him—he was tending the flock of his father-in-law in the wilderness, an ordinary and humble task. And yet, in the midst of his daily work, God’s voice broke through, calling him by name.
Moses was not a perfect man. He had a troubled past, having fled from Egypt after killing an Egyptian (Exodus 2:11-15). He was a fugitive, a shepherd, and an unlikely leader. Yet, none of these limitations stopped God from choosing him. God did not wait for Moses to be ready or to perfect himself; rather, He met Moses where he was and transformed him into a great leader.
This is the beauty of God's call: He does not require us to be sinless, eloquent, or powerful. He simply asks us to respond. "Come as you are," He says, and in His presence, He makes us new. Just as Moses removed his sandals on holy ground, we, too, are called to surrender and acknowledge the sacredness of God’s presence in our lives.
God reassures Moses with His name: "I AM WHO AM." This eternal name signifies that God is unchanging, ever-present, and faithful. He is not just the God of the past—of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—but also the God of the present and the future. He is with us in our weaknesses, fears, and doubts, just as He was with Moses.
Like Moses, we may feel inadequate or unworthy when God calls us. We may question our abilities or hesitate due to our past. But God does not call the qualified—He qualifies the called. When we respond with faith, He equips us with His grace and power.
Let us take comfort in knowing that God sees us, hears our cries, and calls us by name. No matter where we are, no matter what burdens we carry, He invites us to step forward and trust in Him. And just as He led Moses to greatness, He will lead us to a life of purpose, transformation, and grace.
Lord, help me to answer Your call with trust and humility. I come as I am, knowing that in Your hands, I am made worthy. Amen.
