To Inherit the Eternal Life

ree

Jesus' dialogue in Luke 10:25-37 offers a clear and actionable path. It also invites us into a lifelong journey of transformation. The scholar’s question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” is the same question we all ask at some point. Jesus answers not with a rulebook, but with a call to love, and in doing so, reveals the practical path to eternal life:

1. Love God with your whole being.

"You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind."

This is not just emotion—it’s a total commitment:

  • Heart: Make space for God daily through prayer, even when life is busy.

  • Mind: Read and meditate on Scripture. Let God's Word shape your thinking and decisions.

  • Strength: Use your energy and abilities for good—serving others, working honestly, and resisting sin.

  • Soul: Stay connected to God through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist and Reconciliation, which renew our spiritual life.

Loving God is shown in trusting Him, in returning to Him with repentance, and in aligning our lives with His will.

2. Love your neighbor as yourself.

This is where Jesus expands our understanding: eternal life is not a private transaction with God—it unfolds in our love for others, especially the wounded, the ignored, and the marginalized.

In the parable, the Samaritan sees, stops, touches, cares, gives, and returns. Each action is a practical step of love:

  • Be aware of those who are suffering—at work, in your family, or on the streets.

  • Don't wait to be asked—offer help when you see the need.

  • Don’t justify avoiding people who are hard to love—choose mercy over convenience.

3. Listen to God's voice and obey His commands.

“Heed the voice of the Lord your God... when you return to the Lord with all your heart.” (Deut. 30:10)

Awareness of God’s will begins in daily listening—not just hearing but discerning:

  • Ask daily: Lord, what do you want me to do today?

  • Let His Word form your conscience so your choices reflect His love.

  • Keep His commandments—not as a burden, but as a path of life.

4. Return to the Lord with all your heart.

Eternal life is a relationship—not a reward we earn, but a life we receive when we remain in God. Conversion, repentance, and recommitment are ongoing.

When we fail, we turn back. When we doubt, we seek Him again. When we grow cold, we ask for fire.

In Summary: To inherit eternal life...

  • Know and love God with your whole being.

  • Love your neighbor with mercy and action.

  • Listen to God’s voice through Scripture, prayer, and Church teaching.

  • Obey His commands not out of fear, but out of love.

  • Return to the Lord each day—with all your heart.

This is the Christian way—not only to eternal life in the future, but to a life that already begins now, in union with God and in love for others. As Jesus said: “Do this, and you will live.”
